Fernandina Beach is the only incorporated City on Amelia Island. The Isle of 8 Flags has a multi-layered and colorful history. We have been very fortunate to have among our forebears, folks who recognized that preservation of that history is vital to our economic health. Fernandina Beach Main Street has inherited a large part of that responsibility. The organization is 4 years old and has been active in creating and sponsoring multiple events to bring folks to our downtown area. Some are the Sip and Shop, Islandstock, The Amelia Island Concours Road Rally, and the 8 Flags Car Show. We have also sponsored and held events celebrating and educating our efforts around Preservation. We sponsor an awards ceremony, and we sponsor a preservation home tour. We have published a book outlining revitalization efforts in the 1970's in our downtown area. We implemented a district-wide Wayfinding program last year and a butterfly garden near our historic train depot. Our future includes an expansion of our boundaries which will embrace multiple additional historic structures including several historically African-American churches, B&B's and our local Community Redevelopment area. This expansion will ensure that the "gateways" into downtown are also given the attention they deserve from a preservation and from a marketing perspective. Learning from our first implementation, we recognize the need for a wide spread educational/informational program to the properties in our expanded district. This money would make that effort successful.
