Main Street Homer (MSH) is working to make Homer vibrant! We strive to improve the quality of life for the entire community by creating a vibrant core in our parish seat. MSH is a state and nationally accredited nonprofit organization with the mission to "revitalize Downton Homer through cultural and economic development, historic preservation and advancement of the arts." Utilizing grants, historic tax credits, donations, and property tax abatements, MSH has revitalized a vacant lot into a public park, renovated six historic buildings, and is in the process of renovating a 1920's filling station. Through historic preservation, we work to create infrastructure in our Nationally Registered Historic District for new business opportunities. Since our inception, Homer has seen five new businesses open on our downtown square. The contest prizes will be used to help renovate two historic buildings that were donated to our organization. The vacant and dilapidated buildings are adjacent to our downtown public park and reception hall that were created from a previously overgrown lot and neglected building. The park complex created a place for the community to enjoy open space and is a venue for art, music, and cultural events that bring tourism and foot traffic downtown increasing business with our local merchants. Once renovated, these buildings will serve as business incubator sites to grow locally owned small businesses, an indoor event venue to supplement the outdoor park, an art classroom, and art gallery to sell local art. The STIHL equipment gift certificate will allow us to obtain much needed lawn equipment to maintain the park. The prize money will provide funding to continue our mission and create economic vitality through historic preservation. Thank you for supporting us by selecting Main Street Homer as your favorite Main Street Community. Together we can help Homer happen!
