Once desolate and blighted, downtown now flourishes with award-winning arts and entertainment, plus preservation-friendly residential and commercial development that makes Jacksonville a Great American Main Street Community! Behind the success is Jacksonville Main Street, advocating for small business and preservation, delivering access to rehabilitation and business incentives, building consensus and partnerships, and producing family-friendly events. Two low-interest loan programs offer more tools to support property enhancement and long-range economic development goals that include establishing a business incubator. JMS embraces new technology, providing free Wi-Fi in the park, hosting online available space and interactive business directories, plus training businesses to set up social media accounts and encourage patronage with internet promotions. Historic sites, like Looking for Lincoln exhibits, an iconic Civil War Statue, and Illinois' only Charters of Freedom Monument, draw visitors to Jacksonville's traditional commercial center. Besides creating heritage tourism attractions, Jacksonville Main Street beautification projects leave a lasting legacy, augmenting downtown's historic character with 11 murals, vintage Ferris wheel benches, and over 40 trees and plantings. Plans are underway for an international mural restoration meet in 2019 as part of the locally funded non-profit's 20th Anniversary Celebration. Hosting a free concert series and popular Craft Brew Festival/Makers and Artisan Market to highlight Illinois-made products and regional music attract thousands annually. The Pumpkin Festival offers fun for all with costume contests, smores-making, kid-rides, pumpkin drops and decorating. JMS also encourages downtown entrepreneurs with their own First Friday and annual Small Business Saturday specials! Having something for everyone and planning for the future makes Jacksonville a leader in revitalization, ensuring Downtown is the greatest place to be!
