Jewell, Iowa has been in the Iowa Main Street program since 1991. When they began they had a street full of empty and falling down buildings. Now, they are working on the last building they can get their hands on. They have renovated 13 buildings and currently every building but one is occupied or unavailable. The one they do have just came up for rent and JADE (Jewell Area Development Enterprise) is working on a two bedroom apartment above the already completed storefront. One particular building they saved after the roof had caved in to the basement. Now, it is the most beautiful building on the block and it houses a new dentist's office. Not only have they done buildings, they have started going back and adding upper story housing above the shops. This has brought renewed interest downtown. They have reinvented themselves over the past few years, and even though they are a town of only 1200 people they still have a medical clinic, a dentist, a chiropractor, a grocery store, a hardware store, three vintage shops, a quilt shop and a store that sells homemade soap. They are also part of Hamilton Hometowns. Located in Hamilton County Iowa, they have joined with three other smaller towns to market together as "Hamilton Hometowns." They have created unique downtown events like an upcoming Casserole Festival which will include local shops having casseroles to sample, a frustration station, where you can buy dishes to break, a Tator Tot Trot in which participants will run a mile down a local trail, eat some Tator Tot Casserole and then run back, and then the evening wraps up with a potluck and Hamilton Hometown casserole cook-off. Everyone works together in this community and it shows. They are truly the little town that could!
