Downtown Peotone Illinois should win this contest due to several factors. The first is that we are in a prime location just 40 miles directly south of the city of Chicago. While being so close to the city we are still a very small community with just under 4,000 residents. The downtown business district has struggled severely over the past 15-25 years with many of the original buildings becoming vacant to due to the struggles of small town retail. Currently we have several very successful businesses in the district including a furniture store, three attorney's offices, a real estate office, cafe type restaurant, bowling alley, and a very active American Legion. Within the past three years we have added a new eye doctor's office, photography studio, dog groomer, and an automotive repair shop. With all this being said, there are still 10 vacancies. The major issue we have is the lack of resources for redevelopment of the cosmetic appearances of some of the buildings. On one hand, several of the buildings look great while the other half look completely neglected and in some cases, ready to fall over. With this great we could do all sorts of things to revitalize this business district starting with nice flowers, trees, improve sidewalks, building facades, and unlimited other possibilities. The end result would be to create a destination that people would travel to from surrounding communities to support the current and new businesses that this redevelopment would create. It would also provide a great sense of pride for the current residents to have a product they can be proud of instead of the current eye sore that exists today.
